How do i find out about employer responsibilities and worker's rights?
Workers have a right to a safe workplace.  The law requires employers to provide their employees with safe and healthful workplaces.  The OSHA law also prohibits employers from retaliating against employees for exercising their rights under the law (including the right to raise a health and safety concern or report an injury).  For more information see www.whistleblowers.gov or Worker's rights under the OSH Act.
OSHA can help answer questions or concerns from employers and workers.  To reach your regional or area OSHA office, go to the OSHA Office by State webpage or call 1-800-321-OSHA (6742).

Manhole Safety

No Job is so important and no service is so urgent that we cannot take the time to perform our work safely.
That may be just a slogan to some low level manager but to us it can be a matter of life or death.  Do not be bullied or shamed into going into a manhole without a qualified person on top to make sure you are safe.
If you are asked or ordered to do so contact the Local immediately. We have copies of the regulations and the number for the OSHA inspectors.  We will gladly contact them.
